The Duke and Duchess of Sussex on Saturday released pictures of the christening of their son, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, which was held in Windsor earlier in the day.

The couple released two pictures on their Instagram account, which were taken by their wedding photographer, Chris Allerton.

The first one shows them surrounded by their extended family including the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince Charles and his wife the Duchess of Cornwall, as well as Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland and Prince Harry’s aunts from his mother’s side, Lady Jane Fellowes and Lady Sarah McCorquodale. It was taken in the Windsor castle’s Green Drawing Room.

The second is an intimate black-and-white picture of the new family shot in the Rose Garden.

Archie is seen wearing a handmade replica of the royal christening gown worn by royal infants for the last 11 years. The original gown, which was commissioned by Queen Victoria in 1841, was deemed too fragile by the Queen in 2004 and is being preserved.

A spokesperson for the couple said that “The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are overjoyed to share the happiness of this day, and would like to thank everyone around the world for their ongoing support. They feel so fortunate to have enjoyed this special moment with family and Archie’s godparents.”

Revellers gathered outside Windsor Castle on Saturday morning after reports emerged the christening would be held there in a private ceremony by the Archbishop of Canterbury.

Parents Prince Harry and Meghan Markle had faced some criticism for not giving the public a glimpse of the event and declining to reveal the names of Archie’s godparents.

Archie was born May 6 and is seventh in line to the British throne.
