This, we’re asked to believe, is it the future of individual transportation, an Ever Ready utopia for government, green groups and some car manufacturers. “What is it?” asks Ian Callum, Jaguar’s design head, rhetorically. “It doesn’t matter; eventually it will become the norm.”
Yet even Dr Wolfgang Ziebart, Jaguar’s exhaustingly spritely 68-year-old technical design director, admits that making a battery-electric car is extraordinarily simple. Cynics might add that it’s even simpler when Tesla’s Model X has proved the concept of a luxury , battery – poweredSUV with a 600 kg battery in the floor and a couple of AC electric motors driving each set of wheels.
